Nach einem Zeitungsvolontariat studierte er in München und im spanischen Salamanca unter anderem Politik und Geschichte. Die ersten Schritte auf der Bühne machte er zu Beginn der 80er Jahre bei einer Marionettenbühne und war in dieser Zeit Mitbegründer des Bamberger Kulturforums "Palais Schrottenberg". 1985 folgte das erste kabarettistische Soloprogramm. Für seine Arbeit wurde Frank-Markus Barwasser vielfach ausgezeichnet. So erhielt er unter anderem den Deutschen Kabarettpreis (2001), den Salzburger Stier (2002), den Deutschen Kleinkunstpreis, den Bayerischen Kabarettpreis (beide 2004) sowie 2006 den Bayerischen Fernsehpreis.
