In Afghanistan gang-rape victims demand severe punishments for the people involved in the crime. Two girls, thirteen and twelve years old, were gang-raped by powerful men and regional commanders in Sar-e-Pul province (north of Kabul) about four months back. They say that till now no measures have been taken against the people who had raped them. They demanded justice from the government and legal and judicial bodies. Increasing cases of rape, especially those of children, have greatly worried people in the country. Human rights organizations have also expressed concern over the terrible aftermath of the rapes. Warlords are engaged in such crime, but they still enjoy immunity before any court and no one care for these ill-fated girls.

Unable to get the right paperwork, they're fuelling an illegal human smuggling network, which sees hundreds risk their lives to cross the desert every day. The first international journalist to visit the area in a decade, Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports now from Nimruz.

Iranian movie about Afghani ppl Young Lateef works on a construction site in Tehran with some Kurds and a few illegal Afghan workers. When Lateef is given heavier tasks to compensate for new Afghan worker Rahmat, he resents his displacement and treats Rahmat cruelly. After one of his pranks, however, Lateef discovers Rahmat's secret--he is a girl named Baran. Latif's heart softens towards Baran and he shows his new affection for her by doing what he can to ease the hardships she suffers at work. When government inspectors force all Afghans to be fired from the site, Lateef discovers he cannot bear to be without her. Jeopardizing social standing and endangering his own well being, Lateef stops at nothing to save his love.

The Department of Defense says a vehicle borne suicide bomber detonated himself in Khowst province eastern Afghanistan. In the process he killed 16, including 14 children, and wounded 58 others. (Dec. 28)
